Computers in the Workplace

For this discussion, I chose cybersecurity and information technology industry because it directly relates to my current role and career goals. I currently work as a Tier 1 Help Desk Representative in a federal environment, where computers are essential for nearly every task performed by employees. Computer are used to secure communication, access databases, monitor systems, troubleshoot technical issues, and maintain network connectivity. An IT professional relies on a computer to diagnose hardware and software problems, manage user accounts, update security systems, and protect organizational data from cyber threats. Without computers, it would be extremely difficult for organizations to maintain productivity, communication, and system security.

Computer literacy is crucial in this environment because employee must understand how to use operating systems, troubleshoot technical issues, recognize security risks, and follow cybersecurity best practices, even non-technical staff must know how to use secure passwords, identify phishing emails, and properly store or share sensitive data. A lack of computer literacy can lead to security vulnerabilities, data loss, or operational disruptions.

Advancements in computer hardware, operating systems, networking technologies, and artificial intelligence (AI) will significantly impact the IT and cybersecurity industry. Hardware improvements increase computing power and allow the organizations to process large volumes of data faster. An advance operating system will incorporate stronger built-in security protections and automation features. The networking technologies such as cloud computing and zero-trust architectures will continue to improve remote access and secure communication.

Artificial intelligence plays a major role in cybersecurity by helping detect threats, analyze patterns, and even respond to incidents more quickly than a traditional system. AI-driven tools assist security teams by identifying suspicious network activities and automating certain defensive actions. AI also introduces new risks because cybercriminals may use it to create a more sophisticated attack. Therefore, because of this cybersecurity professional will need to continuously adapt to and expand their technical skills to protect systems and data effectively in the future.
